Kehinde Wiley

Born in 1977 kehinde, an African American native of Los Angeles made his mark on the world. His mother was an African American who pushed him to pursue art. At the age of 12 he was sent to art school in Russia. His dad was not involved in his life, but his lack if being present in some ways influenced Wiley's art. Wiley's dad was a Nugerian man from the Yoruba tribe. When Wiley was older he decided to go to Nigeria and find his father and seek his other culture. Culture has influenced his art. Not just his own Nigerian culture but twist on other things. The African textile design he uses is very unique. Through his quest he was able to find many patterns and a two way street to his identity. Hip hop and growing up as an African American male while exploring contrasting things. He plays with the stature of power and position with his paintings of black men and women and photographs of them. He puts them on backgrounds that would never be placed with the people he uses. Urban people with royal settings. He takes the rose coming from concrete approach. He leaves the viewer puzzled. Are we all judgmental? Why can't urban people be mounted on a floral background? He takes traditional and contemporary and makes them one. Wiley is a genius. Here are some of his pieces.

According to the article art is A Beethoven concerto, a Mona Lisa and craft is the old stuff. Furniture made by San maloof and things before the industrial revolution. Art can be mistaken for perfection when it isn't supposed to be. Craft takes years to make but it's possible to obtain perfection. The difference between the two is mental. It's easy to fall into habits of doing things. Most hab it is from influence. In art when you develope habits they are helpful reliable and convenient. It comes with maturity once it's formed a style is formed. My style is very random. I live shapes and patterns but I use them as intricate puzzle pieces. I also draw faces. After much analysis I figured out why I'm so into both. I'm complicated and I like to figure people out. I don't understand people and shapes and patterns tell the story of my confusion. My art is complicated.

Art and fear by David Bayles & Ted Orland

"The fear that you're only pretending to do art is the (readily predictable) consequence of doubting your own artistic credentials." PRETENDING

"Nonetheless, the belief persist among some artists (and lots of ex-artist) that doing art means doing things flawlessly-ignoring the fact that this prerequisite would disqualify most existing works of art." PERGECTION

"The lessons you are meant to learn are in your work. To see them, you need only look at your work. To see them, you need only look at the work clearly- without judgement, without need or fear, without wishes or hopes. Without emotional expectations...."

These quotes speak to me!  Often times I sit around and play it safe because I doubt how huge of a success my piece will be. If I make something I want  it to be perfect! I pretend so that I don't screw up. Art shouldn't be a perfect though! I need to look at it and take nothing more than I made this from it! Often times. Fear and emotions are detrimental to my growth as an artist. With first this is no faith, so I need faith! 

Bob Dylan copy cat or artist? Ted talk

Art is made by influence. Building off the work of others. Creations can only take root and grow when they are built off of other works. I agree that huge ideas come from smaller ones, but bob Dylan is a copycat he uses the same words and tunes and speeds things up. That isn't art. He's an artist in the sense that he got a following from doing so. Everything is remixed." Good artist copy, great artist steal." In the words of Picasso. It's an endless circle. Art is an endless circle. I can use other artist to make my ideas, and I can remix so eyeing I have already done. 

Jerry Seinfeld and Tom Brady

With foundation and base football players and instruments coincide. There has to be a conductor, a quarter back and the instruments are players. Everything falls into place. Work starts before we step on the field. It's a mindset. With every craft time is needed. That's where the work starts, in plotting. Seinfeld takes years to write his pieces. He only hand writes his pieces. It's more authentic. Yellow paper and a blue pen. There has to be connective tissue in jokes just like a conductor needs players. Things have to go together. It's an art.

Bored in class: board in class

I often times find myself doodling in class. One day I started cartooning Jacquil. 


Things like death inspire me. The view from my space is the cemetery and I find it calming. I want to do something with death.
